University of York

Dear Mr Singh Sekhon,

Each year, the University of York seeks to recognise the achievements of a number of distinguished people by awarding them the honorary degree of Doctor of the University. The University and our Council governing body would be deeply honoured if you would accept an honorary degree at one of our ceremonies, in July 2026, or beyond.

The Chancellor and our committee wish to recognise your outstanding career as an entrepreneur, your philanthropic ethos, and unwavering civic commitment. The values you have demonstrated throughout your career align with the University’s focus on inclusion, social justice and accessibility. As a pillar of the Bradford business community, and chair of Yorkshire Sikh Forum, you have devoted your life to breaking down barriers; contributing to the regeneration of Bradford’s urban landscape; helping to eliminate homelessness; and nurturing the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.

Your dedication to giving back is a testament to your character, and belief that success comes with a responsibility to serve others.

Likewise, the University of York has a founding ethos of public good, a long-standing commitment both to the local community and to the belief that education should be accessible to all.

If you are willing to accept our offer of an honorary degree, the University’s Head of Events will contact you to discuss potential dates for your award; the format of the ceremonies and associated events, and your personal requirements.

If you would like any further information before giving a formal reply, do please let me know. It would be a true honour to welcome you to the global York community.
